These 1 hour, illustrated talks by a member of the education team will give your students an insight into the business of running a major attraction in one of the UK’s foremost tourist destination cities, and can be booked in combination with a visit to one or more of our sites: JORVIK, DIG, Barley Hall, The Richard III Experience at Monk Bar and The Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar.
This is an opportunity for your class to meet with a heritage tourism professional, who will answer their questions and give informed, behind-the-scenes insights to enhance their visit. Students will also take part in a guided group exercise to analyse a range of printed marketing materials which can be taken away for further work.
Our two presentations have been created to assist in case study work. We can also tailor our presentations to the particular interests of your group.
Option 1: City Case Study – York as a Tourist City
Taking the city of York as its focus, this presentation will introduce the wealth of tourism assets to be found within its walls. York will be situated in its historic and regional context, with reference to the organisations and tourism agencies involved in promoting the city to visitors. Students will consider each of the following:
- Travel to and within the city, including modes, routes and providers
- The role of tourism boards, including Welcome to Yorkshire, Yorkshire’s Magnificent Attractions and Visit York
- The appeal of York as a destination to different audiences
- York’s main tourist attractions
- The impacts of tourism on the city and its communities, both positive and negative
- The methods used to control negative impacts
Option 2: Organisation Case Study – York Archaeological Trust
Topics covered include the following:
- The history of York Archaeological Trust, an archaeological unit, educational charity and operator of the world-famous JORVIK Viking Centre
- The creation of JORVIK: its launch in 1984, its 30th anniversary in 2014
- The place of JORVIK and its sister attractions within York’s heritage and tourism portfolio
- The internal structure of the Attractions and Events Division of YAT
- Our ethos: Discover, Explore, Experience
- Our activities and our products
- Our audiences, and how we cater for them (families, groups, visitors with special needs, different age groups)
- Our marketing methods (print, internet, TV and radio)
- Feedback from our visitors
- Working at a tourist attraction, including job opportunities within the wider heritage tourism sector, the duties involved and the skills and qualities needed.

Our in-depth Leisure and Tourism presentations will take place at our hands-on archaeology attraction, DIG, in the centre of York. Presentations are priced at just £3 per student, and can be booked in combination with a visit to one or more of our attractions. If booked with 2 attractions, presentations are priced at the reduced rate of £2.50. If booked with 3 or more, presentations are priced at just £2 per student.
