Barley Hall:

When can I hire the Hall?

The Hall can be hired on any day (apart from Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Eve)

Private Hire timings:

Bookings will be during the time after 18:00 and must be finish by 12am at the latest.

Wedding Reception timings:

Starting at  6pm, again it must be finish by 12am at the latest.

The minimum hire period for all events is 3 hours.

When can I get access to the Hall?

Private Hire:

You can gain access to the Hall at any time after 4pm or 5pm depending on season.

Wedding Reception:

You can gain access to the Hall at any time from after 9am (or earlier by arrangement) if you wish to drop anything off.

Please note that we will be preparing and cleaning the Hall prior to your event and therefore we will ask you to keep access prior to your event to a minimum number of people.

Is there vehicular access to the Hall?

Unfortunately vehicles cannot park close to the Hall.

The easiest access where you can park is on Swinegate / Grape Lane. Please be aware of the following restrictions:

Monday to Sunday, before 10:30am and after 5pm.

The nearest car parks, which are a short walk, are at Union Terrace to the North of York, Monk Bar to the East and Castle Car Park to the South.

Where is Barley Hall?

Barley Hall is located down Coffee Yard, which runs between Grape Lane / Swinegate and Stonegate.

What are the minimum and maximum numbers of people I can invite to my celebration?

Canapé Receptions and Buffets:

In the Great Hall we can cater between a minimum of 25 and maximum of 45.

In the Parlour we can cater between a  minimum of 20 and maximum 30.

Seated Receptions:

In the Great Hall we can accommodate between a minimum of 25 and maximum of 45.

In the Parlour we can accommodate between a minimum of 12 and maximum of 20.

If you wish to hire out the Great Hall, Parlour and Gallery we can increase the maximum capacity to 100 guests.

Is there disabled access to the Hall?

Barley Hall is a reconstructed medieval townhouse and as such has some restrictions for those guests with mobility and access difficulties.

Although there is access to the ground floor, the Great Hall features a raised threshold at the doorway. The first floor, on which the Parlour and Gallery are located, is accessed via a staircase, which some guests may find a little steep. It is advisable that small children are looked after when using this staircase. Unfortunately there is no lift to the first floor.

We will be very pleased to discuss your access requirements at any time, and recommend that you visit the Hall early on in your planning stages if you have any concerns of this nature.

What toilet facilities and baby changing areas do you have?

Barley Hall has one male and one female toilet. Unfortunately the Hall does not offer separate toilets for disabled guests or permanent baby changing facilities at this time. If you require baby-changing facilities for your guests please discuss your requirements with us.

What is Barley Hall’s Cancellation Policy?

Should you have to cancel your booking; a charge will be made, calculated as a percentage of the total booking value and according to the scale highlighted below:

  • 12 to 4 weeks prior to the event 50%
  • Within 4 weeks prior to the event 100%

With regard to reductions in numbers for catering booked through Barley Hall; a charge will be made when final numbers for events drop below 60% of the original numbers stated at the time of the booking confirmation. For catering booked with an external supplier, clients will need to check their cancellation policy separately.

Cancellations need to be confirmed in writing by the client.

Are there any shoe restrictions for me or my guests?

Please ensure that your guests are aware that due to the uneven nature of traditional flooring in some parts of our attraction, stiletto heels smaller than a 5 pence coin, are not considered suitable. We do sell heel protectors for those guests who still wish to wear them.

Please note that the Functions Co-ordinator / Supervisor’s decision is final.

JORVIK Viking Centre:

When can I hire JORVIK?

Time of Year:

JORVIK can be hired on any day (apart from Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Eve).

Timings:

Depending on the package you desire, the Yorkshire and Viking packages are between 7pm and 9:30pm and the Basic package is from 6:30pm as no caterers will be needed.

Is there Parking provided?

Unfortunately JORVIK does not have its own parking as it central to York.

The nearest car parks, which are a short walk, are at Union Terrace to the North of York, Monk Bar to the East and Castle Car Park to the South.

What are the minimum and maximum numbers of people I can invite to my celebration?

All of the packages we provide  at JORVIK have to have a minimum of 25 and a maximum of 80 guests.

If you would like a increase in the capacity our events and hospitality coordinators would be happy to advise.

Is there disabled access to JORVIK?

JORVIK  provides Wheelchair access to all areas and disabled access to toilets. Furthermore for we also provide hearing loop and large print guide for the ride.
